I moved out 8 years ago and now live in the South (holy culture crash, Batman), but I lived on 59 and Fig and that never felt like anything less than paradise. You'd be north of York Blvd which was where a lot of OGs/Veteranos were from (2nd and 3rd biggest areas would be near Fig and 50, and Fig and 60 by Penny's - is that still around?)įor as many angry veteranos as there are, the crime rate is a lot lower than 20 or even 10 years ago when there was a much bigger presence of the old school Avenues/Dog town/MVST and Eagle Rock gangs. If you're used to the quiet life of La Crescenta and want nice, safe, open streets where you can easily bike or walk, then it's not a good place to live. If you're a young person looking to do cool stuff, I think Highland Park is a good place to live. That's what you get with an older neighborhood. Lots of the apartments around Fig are also on streets that are narrow and crowded. A lot of the desirable places in Highland Park are up in the hills on narrow, windy roads. As someone else said, parking is definitely an issue. Some friends of mine have lived in Highland Park for a few years and they like it, although they're hipsters so they complain about the lack of a good grocery store. I lived in Silver Lake, and even though that's considered a nicer neighborhood, there's way more crime and graffiti there, so maybe my tolerance is higher. I think we just hear about it more because there are still gang killings there a few times a year. Statistically, Highland Park isn't really that dangerous of a neighborhood. I'm pretty new to LA, having only lived here for a year, and am unfamiliar with most areas. Thanks.Įdit: Not trying to be critical of one area or another, just genuinely curious what people think. Would especially appreciate thoughts from people who have moved from the foothill areas to Highland Park, or vice versa. So I'm not sure the area is the right fit for me. However, frankly I've enjoyed being up in the hills as far away from the city as possible. Would anyone recommend it to someone who isn't familiar with the area? It seems much less pedestrian friendly(I like to run and bike around town), possibly higher crime, but more interesting with more going on. I would be renting a small loft in a multi story home. I have the opportunity as a young, single professional to move to Highland Park. Putting that aside, what do people think of living in the Highland Park area today? Currently living around La Crescenta, a safe, quiet, and frankly boring area, haha. I've read quite a lot about the issues of gentrification. Usually they involve drinking heavily, but sometimes we get more creative. Socials are sporadic special events promoted by /r/LosAngeles.
